Letters from America
Sunday 4 March 2018
I went to see Black Panther during the week which was an all round adventure. I was very taken with the animated font that was used for the credits at the end of the film. So much so I did some searches and uncovered a version of the font that a fan had developed after having seen the film and also having been enthusiastic about the merit of the graphics. The creative fan called the font Panther. Here is an image I did using the font (I posted this on Twitter at the time I made it):
Perhaps the font won’t look much in this static form. All I can say is the clever geometric unpacking of the font during the extended credit roll for the film itself was great, it was really captivating.
Something else pretty captivating happened during the week too. I went roadside rambling in the country to pick blackberries – they are ripe just now. These blackberries were not affected by any Council spraying (otherwise they would be well and truly dead) and the fruit was delicious. The very day I picked the blackberries I received a wonderful photo from my resourceful friend M.E., which was a shot of his latest crop of home grown figs which he had just picked. So I had my own fruit photo to match, just by luck. Figs are an absolute favourite and if I am fortunate I may get a cutting of one of M.E’s fig trees to grow in the country when conditions are right. Here is the pair of fruit bowls:

Blackberries and black lingerie two of my favourite things. Shame it would not be wise to plant some berries in your proposed orchard. Figs with some cheese and a nice red would be great. What did you do with the figs?

I get what you say about the berries in the orchard, but do you think I might safely grow some in a large container? Alas the figs were sent to me in a photo only not in a bowl, but I will definitely grow figs in the orchard because I think they will thrive (and I adore them :-))

I understand berries will grow quite well in containers also thorn free, thorn less and hybrids are available from some nurseries that should suit. Keeping them away from animals that is the challenge. Good luck when you get around to farming.

I am thinking of doing raspberries and one of my neighbours has given me a little cluster of canes in a pot which is really the starting point. This little piece of land hasn’t ever been farmland it’s just very light bushland with masses of wildflowers in the summer weather. I have been offered bees and will do bees in due course. I thought maybe I could do aquaponics and grow marron – that wonderful west australian small crayfish… what do you think?

MG I do not think it wise to accept my counsel. From what I have learnt about you is that you are very resourceful and confident in your own ability therefore I know you will work it out. Notwithstanding it all sounds a good proposal and doable. Do not know much at all if anything about growing Marron but from what I know is that they are good tucker prone to eating each other and likely to go walk about at night. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. The berries start sounds promising. Do you have a reliable water supply?

Night walking cannibals! I did not know…this sounds even more of a challenge 🙂
I am planning rainwater tanks as there is no town supply even though the place is directly opposite the town weir!
